Max India’s Antara is emerging as a transformative force in India’s rapidly expanding senior care and living sector, betting big on a market poised for exponential growth. Driven by demographic shifts, rising life expectancy, and an aspirational ageing population, India’s senior living ecosystem is already sizeable—estimated at $10–15 billion today and projected to grow to over $30–50 billion in the next decade. This market encompasses residences for seniors, assisted living, transition care, curated products, mental wellness models, and community engagement services, making it one of the most exciting sunrise segments in the Indian economy.
Antara Senior Care, a wholly owned subsidiary of Max India Limited, operates at the heart of this transformation. Originally conceptualised in 2010 and launched in 2013, Antara was created to fill a long-neglected gap in organised senior living and care in India. The business now spans independent senior residences and comprehensive assisted care services, including care homes and “care at home” solutions for older adults with health or mobility challenges.
Antara’s flagship communities—located in Dehradun, Noida (Sector-150), and Gurugram—combine hospitality-style living with robust healthcare and wellness support, tailored specifically for seniors. Antara’s approach is holistic: catering not only to the physical needs of residents but also emphasising social engagement, emotional well-being, intellectual stimulation, and community living.
The company’s expansion plans underscore its confidence in the sector’s growth trajectory. Antara aims to scale its footprint rapidly, developing approximately 1.5 million square feet of senior living space annually and investing significant capital to support expansion into cities such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Pune, and Chandigarh, among others. It has raised capital through equity to fuel this growth and plans to add 8–10 new communities within the next five years, potentially creating 3,500–4,000 senior living units across the country.
More than just real estate, Antara’s model integrates healthcare, wellness, and purposeful living, reflecting how senior living is evolving beyond traditional retirement homes. This integrated ecosystem—blending modern care with community engagement—addresses a broad spectrum of needs, from independent lifestyles to clinical support and chronic care management.
As India’s senior population grows (with estimates suggesting a dramatic rise over the next decades), Antara’s strategic positioning highlights the immense opportunity in senior living. With a market expected to more than double in value, the Antara story exemplifies how inclusive, dignified, and comprehensive senior care can meet growing demand while shaping a new frontier in India’s service economy.
